The Matrons’ Guild
The Matrons’ Guild Auxiliary of Second Baptist Church was organized in 1940 by a group of visionary women in the home of Ms. Grace Wicks. This was a service oriented auxiliary with the purpose of providing support and leadership in ministering to the needs of church members. Additionally, the Guild sought to deepen its religious commitment and impact the Church community through service.
The Guild is responsible for the following projects:
Advent and Lenten Luncheons
“White Christmas” Dinner for Senior Citizens
“Copper Party” for members and guests
Fund and purchase kitchen equipment for the Rev. S. H. James, Jr. Fellowship Hall
Their latest endeavor was to sponsor the Mahogany Brain Challenge which is a Black History competition held each year during the school year, involving students in third through eighth grades. The competition is focused on allowing children to become aware of the contributions Black Americans have made to history.
The Matrons’ Guild meets the second Monday of each month, September through May at 4:00 P.M. Their motto is: “A group that prays together stays together.”
