Trustee Ministry

Members of the Second Baptist Church Trustee Ministry, under the leadership of the pastor, are charged with the responsibility of being faithful stewards in the execution and management of the business of the church as well as being faithful Christians in the home and in the community. Trustees are held to the same Biblical standards as members of the Board of Deacons. Each board may function separately or it may conduct the affairs of the church as a joint board, chaired by the pastor. Under the joint board concept, each board may meet separately to plan and develop proposals to be presented to the Joint Deacon and Trustee Board for further discussion and approval. Second Baptist Church utilizes the Joint Deacon and Trustee Board concept. All trustees are responsible to the pastor and the church body. Each trustee is assigned work in the area of need as designated by the Chairman of the Trustee Board.

Biblical reference to a steward or trustee named Eliezer can be traced back to the days of Abraham (before his name change), Genesis 15:2. The Bible also refers to “the Steward of Joseph’s household,” Genesis 43:19. The organizational structure for use of the trustee can be seen in Exodus chapter 18. Jethro, a priest of Midian, taught his son-in-law, Moses organized management practices in governing the children of Israel. As general manager, Moses developed an efficient management team. The Trustee Ministry at Second Baptist Church is the maintenance and management team of the church.

Duties and responsibilities of the deacon and the trustee sometimes overlap. Acts 6:1-5 confirms that there is a fine line of distinction. Seven men were chosen to be responsible for the management and distribution of funds. One may view this fiduciary function as a trusteeship. In the modern Christian church, trustees are an elected team of people chosen for their skills and abilities to perform specific tasks in designated areas. Trustees must be willing to learn new skills and enroll in continuing education courses. The trustee must be flexible and willing to embrace change. Members of the Board of Trustees act as stewards and managers of the total material possessions, real properties and financial assets of the church. They are charged with regular maintenance and beautification of the church physical plant. Trustees act as legal agents of the church before the state to execute real property purchases, land acquisition, management and securing permits. Each trustee has pledged to be sensitive to the needs of this congregation and to seek divine guidance in meeting those needs.

One of the criteria for selecting a trustee is that he/she must be spiritual because the office of trustee is a spiritual ministry. “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” Acts 4:2. Trustees must be faithful in their study of God’s Word to obtain a proper knowledge of its relationship to the theology of the church. The trustee’s study motto is 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

The life of the faithful trustee is void of secret shameful acts, willful deceit, the bearing of false witness, the love of money and sins of the flesh. His/her spirituality must be totally consistent with the ministry of Christian service. The fervent prayer life of the trustee and the enthusiasm to win souls to Jesus Christ is a daily goal.
